Disney Cruise Line Industry Firsts and Innovations

Once you've sailed with Disney Cruise Line, you will not want to sail with any other line, guaranteed! Disney offers the most innovative designs and ideas which I will outline here.

Of utmost importance to patrons is the quality of staterooms and Disney doesn't disappoint. Firstly, the staterooms are twenty-five percent larger than the industry standard contributing to more ease and comfort. Eighty percent have ocean views. They also feature the 'split bath' configuration, meaning one offering a tub/shower and sink and the second one offering a toilet and sink. You will find ample storage and shelving in both bathrooms.

All inside staterooms aboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy offer the 'Magical Porthole' which plays a live feed from the outside of the ship, making guests feel as if they have an Oceanview stateroom. The Disney Magic and the Disney Wonder have a large porthole mirror giving the illusion of depth and space perception.

Guests have complimentary use of the ships Wave Phones for their onboard communication needs with friends and family as well as communication with the childrens clubs. Wave Phones are found in every stateroom.

Only Disney Cruise Line offers beverage stations which are free and operate twenty-four hours a day providing guests with soft drinks, water, coffee, tea, and hot water and cocoa. These are to be found on all the pool decks, help yourself.

Rotational dining is extremely popular with DCL because guests rotate and experience different themes and dining aboard three a la carte restaurants and the best part is that guests are followed each night by their waitstaff.

In one of the restaurants, Animators Palate aboard the Disney Fantasy, guests become animators and turn their creations into live animations displayed on screens in the restaurant.

Disney offers a multitude of deck parties and theme nights with the most exciting one being The Pirates in the Caribbean Deck Party where guests will be enchanted with Fireworks at Sea and Disney Cruise Line was the first in the industry to offer such entertainment.

Get ready to see The Muppets and play an interactive game on the LCD screens offered through the ships Enchanted Art.

On the pool decks of the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, another industry first is the longest shipboard watercoaster called the AquaDuck.

Little Pirates and Princesses can be transformed into their favourite characters over at the Disney Fantasy's Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and Pirates League at Sea, perfect for those special themed nights.

Speaking of children, Disney Cruise Line offers the best activities at sea catered to the different age groups including infants and toddlers. From Flounders Reef Nursery to It's a Small World Nursery to the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab all the way to exclusive spaces for tweens, called The Edge and for teens, called The Vibe. Why teens even have their own sun deck and splash pool. How cool is that? Not to mention the huge interactive LCD floor screen in the Oceaneer Club.

The Buena Vista Theatre offers movie premiers at sea the same day a film debuts including all Disney Digital 3-D films, all in a comfortable setting featuring Dolby sound.

Disney Cruise Line's private island in the Bahamas, called Castaway Cay has a Family Beach, an all adult beach called Serenity Bay and an all new Teen Beach. You can also rent Cabanas either on the Family Beach or on Serenity Bay.
Another innovation on this island is that the ship actually docks rather than tendering, making it so convenient for patrons.

The Disney Wonder, the second in the fleet, has an animated character, TinkerBell as the Godmother.

Another innovative, eco-friendly and economical feature is that the hull coating reduces surface resistance and is not toxic to the ocean waters.

Here's the best part. Disney Cruise Line was granted special permission from the U.S. Coast Guard to paint their lifeboats in the Mickey Mouse yellow, in keeping with the theme colors of the ships.

Now, what are you waiting for, go over to and book your cruise and don't forget to re-book while onboard to receive special offers and discounts. Also, head over to Disney Parks Moms Panel for in depth, customized planning advice and best of all, it's free!

  1. There's so much here that I didn't know, Jackie- thanks for sharing this great DCL info. Your passion come through as you describe all these amenities! When's your next trip??

    1. Thank you for taking the time to read my post and for your positive feedback!

      Jackie :)

  2. Never cruised before but having read this I don't think I'd ever pick another cruise line. I didn't realize all the extra services etc. Disney offers. Thanks for the information.

  3. We love Disney cruises and Jackie is absolutely right --- they do offer many things that other cruise lines don't offer. However, all of that comes with a price. Disney cruises are anywhere from 30% to 80% more expensive than other cruise lines. For families, it's definitely worth the extra to cruise with Disney. However, if your group is totally adults, and maybe not all of them are Disney nuts, then you might want to consider other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, etc. ...but definitely Disney if you're taking the kids!

    1. Thank you Gloria, I really love the atmosphere on the Disney ships, you don't get people walking around corridors drunk and out of control. That is very important to me for my sense of security. I have no problem allowing my daughter to walk around the ship on her own. I can't say that for the other lines.

We've me many, many passengers without kids on all four ships, who marvel at all of the adult offerings on the Disney ships, and claimed that the only difference is the lack of gambling.

Beverage Stations Aboard the Disney Cruise Line Ships

One of the many aspects of sailing with Disney Cruise Line that you do not have to worry about, is your beverages. You don't need to buy a soda or water package or wear a wrist band. Most beverages aboard Disney Cruise Line are complimentary.

Disney Cruise Line has twenty-four hour Beverage Stations near the pools and you can have as much as you wish. The Beverage Stations come equipped with soda/water cups and hot beverage, insulated cups, lids and straws. At these stations you'll find an abundance of soda, coffee, fountain water, ice, hot water. For the hot water, they provide a variety of tea and cocoa mixes.

Walt Disney Studios Tour, Burbank, California.

Never in a million years did I ever imagine walking the backlot streets of the Walt Disney Studio in Burbank. Yet, there we were over Christmas vacation in December 2011. It was all real, I couldn't stop pinching myself, I was awestruck! I could not believe my eyes or the ground that I walked upon. Just the mere thought of being where Walt Disney was, was enough for me. Looking at the items he touched or dealt with was mind blowing. I was even able to hold.....are you ready for this? Yes, hold a REAL Oscar. Not only a real Oscar, but Walt Disney's Oscar for his Nature Documentary. My whole body tingled, I was shaking with excitement and boy, oh boy did I make sure my hands were clean. I don't know how many times I asked if I should wear gloves. The ever so friendly Cast Member, an Archivist, smiled and said it was okay, bare hands were fine. I was completely BLOWN away! The whole experience began with us pulling up to the security guard booth at Walt Disney Studios in Burban…
